Coming in June: A gift taken and shared: four weeks, four classes, for change

gift of yoga

gift of yoga

It had been some time since the  last immersion had been offered, and so I was surprised when a couple  of students mentioned that they missed them, and would like to jump into another one.  after having the previous two immersions canceled due to  lack of interest, I wasn’t sure that offering another one would make sense, but my guidance assured me that yes, it would happen and that it was timely and would benefit those who chose to attend.

So, without being attached  to the outcome, I “put it out there” that an immersion was imminent, and over  the course of several weeks, people began to sign up… interestingly, most of  the people who signed up for this immersion were new to this work; and though  it was not apparent to me at the time, this proved to be important.

It  proved to be important because the immersion itself was different.  The  fundamental focus remained the same, but the hiatus or pause since the  previous immersions offered and provided enough space to allow for a  re-framing of the way the immersion happens.

There was clear guidance  on the day to day formatting and sequencing of the various meditations as well as the body of the practices.  Watching all of this unfold helped me to  see anew the power of practice itself… and here’s what I  really want to convey and to share with you.

more than once in a blue moon . . .

more than once in a blue moon . . .

Although we’re all  practicing all of the time, most of what we practice serves to  simply perpetuate what is familiar to us (keeps us ensconced firmly in  our box, and so committed to our perspective..) but when we dare to  try something new on, and I mean literally to wear it, then our perception does indeed shift as a consequence, and so to our lives.

We’ve all helped to create this wonderful space and place we call OmBase - a place where we have the unbridled permission to step out of our costumes and our accustomed ways of being to uncover and so discover something  new… but very few of us are really taking advantage of this gift and embracing what it has to offer us. Typically we drop into a practice here and there, with little commitment to really lean into- to wear and share- what we  uncover and discover as a consequence of our practice. And instead of  allowing it to really move us – even though we may be moved by the practice –  we opt instead to revert back to our more familiar refrain of insisting on resisting.

What I witnessed again through this immersion was just how powerful it is when people simply commit to showing up, and then simply sink into the practice of being—it’s literally life changing and the really good news is that this is the most natural thing one can “do”…. so if  you do show up, it happens.

yoga June

four weeks, four classes in June

So I invite you to consider what keeps you from availing yourself of that which is supporting you?

Could you dare  to give yourself the gift of even committing to just one class a week for  four weeks during the month of June?

Why not ask one of your friends to  join you in this commitment – it’s easier when you have someone to help you -  “….and you’ll also be helping them… and as you show up to  class, not only will you be benefiting, but by helping  OmBase, your presence literally extends this gift to  others.

So let’s give this a shot.. a little experiment.. Four  weeks, Four classes, With a Friend… receive the gift and extend it to  others… and be open for the types of shifts that these recent participants shared below:

“Hi Todd,

Thank you for holding such a great space for the Yoga Immersion class. It was my first entry into yoga other than a few classes here and there. It was the dropping habits focus that actually drew my attention more than the yoga.  Although, I didn’t drop any habits per se, what I discovered was a different connection with myself. A way to tap into that inner knowing – to connect with what do I want. So much of what I do is impulsive or reactive so it was such a pleasure to have a space and time devoted to reconnecting with me that I could work with in my day-to-day life to minimize reactivity. I have been told twice this week that I have softness to my eyes and seem centered. WOW! That is huge as I always feel a bit spinney. My point is when someone on the outside notices a shift then a shift has taken place. I thank you and all in class who shared that space – a yoga sangha!” —  D.D.

“…When I walked out of the studio into daylight, the air felt crisper, the colors brighter, and overall I felt more connection to the universe. What I discovered was a different connection to myself that I have not felt in my years of meditation practice. I connected with my body and moved closer to really feeling into what do I want. I finally understand what it means to get completely out of my head and drop into my feeling self. And, most importantly, I find myself stopping and asking more often what do I want. Taking that minute to ground myself before responding….”.  — D.D. Read the whole blog post

“Hi Todd,

Just saying Thank you for your hard work and the enlightenment you have brought into my life. Thanks for your entire staff to promote Yoga and the great music you have introduced me to. My husband John thanks you too as we like the meditation music but didn’t know which ones to purchase.

The last 3 weeks have been an incredible journey discovering my energy, guides, and a renewed perspective of the river we all share. I believe people close to me are seeing my positive changes. They may not say it, maybe not even conscious of it, but their actions reflect what I feel. Less thinking, more feeling. I love your saying.  — D.C.

To  help support this, I’ll be offering the first Satsang Sarong – Come and Be Embraced about half way through this four weeks (Saturday, June 19th at 6 pm.  It’s free)…. I’d love it if you  joined us… Come and steep in the  energy… there’ll be time for questions too… it’ll be  fun

Thanksgiving Day Class
Fund raiser for Fences For Fido
with Todd
THU 11/26 10-11:45 am

Cost: Please join us and use your class card or leave a cash/check donation. Thank you!

. . . UN-CHAINED . . . one dog at a time

. . . UN-CHAINED . . . one dog at a time

We discovered this organization just a short time ago, wrote about it in our blog, and we want to support them. Fences For Fido builds fences for chained dogs, and not only provides freedom and a completely different (happier!) lifestyle for dogs; they also pay to have the dogs spayed and neutered, as well as build shelter when needed.

Our proceedings on Thanksgiving Day are going to this Portland based, non-profit, all-volunteer company.

Fences For Fido is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the welfare and quality of life for dogs living outdoors. Through their volunteer efforts, they create safer and improved conditions for chained dogs, provide education to the public, and help build healthier communities through awareness and compassion.

For dogs living outdoors on a chain, Fences For Fido reaches out to their guardian and offers a free fence, a new shelter, and free or reduced cost spay/neuter. With their services, dogs who were once chained will learn what it’s like to live, run, and play in a safe and more comfortable environment.

Don’t forget to bring your MAT to class!

We want to remind you starting on 11/1 you will need to own your own mat, as we will not have mats to use at the studio.

We will only offer mats for sale from now on.

Please read the signs posted at the studio to find out more.

yoga mats

yoga mats

The mat lottery is happening this Sun 10/25 after Todd’s class. If you want a lovingly used mat for $20 you can put your name down anytime prior to that (we have a sheet at the front desk). About 10 of those mats will be sold. The names will be picked this Sun, but the old mats will be sold on 11/1, to give everyone a chance to buy a mat.

We also have new mats for sale (from $44 up), you can also go to other places in town to purchase a mat or purchase one online. If you have some questions feel free to call us at the studio. We’ll be happy to answer them.

Please know that mats come in all different sizes and textures, and we have looked at most of the ones on the market. We carry only ECO mats, or ‘natural’ mats, which have no PVC and decompose faster. (better for you and the environment)

We also are an official mat recycling drop off point, so you can bring your own worn out mat to us instead of throwing it out.

Freestyle Yoga
with Jay

Tuesdays & Thursdays 6pm

Jay Fields - free-range

Jay Fields - free-range

Jay’s back!

She’s teaching ongoing classes (Freestyle Yoga) on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 6pm as she has been for the past year (except when she was on her sabbatical this summer).

For the ones of you that are new and haven’t experienced her classes, Jay is one of a kind teacher, and her classes will always inspire you to come back for more.

Though based in a vinyasa practice, Freestyle Yoga is not limited by any labels.  The intention of Freestyle Yoga is to honor the practice as it ebbs and flows day by day—balancing fluid vinyasa with restorative yin, movement with seated meditation.  The class content will evolve based on who arrives, with the common thread throughout being the focus on learning the principles of listening to the body to find a deep connection with Self and with one’s own yoga.

Yin Yoga

The Yin Yoga series and the Yoga Immersion are both back in November. This is the last time before the new year you’ll have a chance to take either of these offerings. Both start and end on the same day.

The immersion is a chance to gather and practice three sessions per week.

Class focuses on healing and balance through visualization, meditation and yoga asanas. This immersion is an opportunity for you to simply immerse yourself in what it is you are practicing. As you do this, what you are practicing becomes more evident, and it may surprise you! The elements of the practice remain essentially the same: getting centered, engaging our curiosity, and listening.

Why not learn the tools to uncover your innate state? Why not find the inherent balance that is in you? When you find your inspiration…. discipline is no longer necessary.

no pre-requisites required… although you may want to drop into at least a few of the BLIS Yoga classes before hand, to get a glimpse of what we’ll be “doing.”

Let us know if you want to sign up by emailing us at OmBase (findpeace@ombase.org).

Belly Dancing starts Next Saturday!
Shakti Flow! Egyptian Inspired Bellydance
with Adriana

Saturdays  10/31-12/5 :: 12-1:15 pm class series

Cost: $66 for 6-week class series. Pre-registration required.

Adriana

Adriana

Join Adriana for a class series for beginner belly dancers! All welcome!

Traditional Egyptian bellydance is known as ‘Raks Sharqi’ in the Middle East. Its subtle nuances, refined movements, feminine grace and beauty characterize this style. It is very expressive in nature and traditionally performed as a solo and improvised dance.

With ancient roots in fertility rites and goddess worship, it has deep spiritual significance for women and has undergone many cultural migrations; an ever-changing and evolving art.

Bellydance is a great form of exercise for women of all ages, shapes and sizes. It’s a natural complement to a woman’s bone and muscle structure with movements coming mainly from the torso. You will learn how to isolate different parts of the body, moving them independently as well as layering movements in fluid patterns and in quick short accents, weaving together the entire feminine essence, and using the movements as a form of creative expression.

Develop body awareness, grace, balance, strength & fluidity and embrace your Divine Beauty.

We will explore classic bellydance movements in a free-form style within a sacred dance circle. Learn proper technique of the foundation movements including isolations, shimmies, figure 8s, hip circles & more.

Express yourself in a safe, non-judgmental environment where you can release tension, love your body, free your inhibitions and feel you own sacredness.  No experience required.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and feel free to wear hip-scarves, veils & skirts.

Call or email (findpeace@ombase.org) to sign up!

Yin Yoga + Sound Healing is back!
with Jay, Tom & Jen

FRI 5/29
7:15-9:45 pm

Cost: $25 Pre-registration/payment. $30 at the door

singing bowlsThis very popular event is happening once again at Om Base….

An evening of total relaxation and healing resonance. Tom and Jen will bring their orchestra of healing chimes, singing bowls, and didgeridoos and play while we ease into an hour and a half of Yin Yoga followed by an hour-long sound healing in savasana. You are invited to relax and to let the vibrations of the sound waves ease into your body and find their own way to the spots that need it the most.

Yin yoga is a totally restorative form of yoga in which you stay in supported seated or supine poses for a few minutes at a time while all of your body-mind’s holding patterns melt away. It’s perfect for people who are new to yoga and the perfect balance for yang-centered practices.
Please pre-register for this class to get a spot! It tends to fill up.

Dance Om: Solo Dance Journeys
SAT 5/30
7-9 pm

Cost: Sliding scale $8-$18 (pre-register or drop in)

Solo Dance Journeys
Join with others in a safe, welcoming environment to take a free-form movement journey all your own.

Please join us for this evening of inner-discovery, self-expression and creativity through the joy of dance – no experience necessary!

Since this gathering does not include physical contact with others during the dance, the evening starts with brief boundary setting so that we can all stay focused and open to our inner impulses. And then we’re off!

The journey begins with a short guided movement meditation for presence & grounding—and here is where the verbal input ends. Continuous waves of a wide variety of music will usher your body, mind & spirit from the Om Base studio to anywhere your inner-eye will take you.

Taking these solo journeys with others doing the same provides the intention, energy & richness that only a group dance can bring. Attention to boundaries ensures that each of our dances can be an uninterrupted and deeply personal journey.

We end with a closing circle, where speaking is optional.

Dr. Felicitas Goodman, anthropologist, found that holding a posture represented by figurines and statues found in archaeological sites from hunters and gathers and horticulturists worldwide, is a method for achieving ecstatic trance and its attendant visionary experience.

Dr. Goodman introduced Dr. Analouise Williams to this ancient mystical tradition. Dr. Williams, a shamanic practitioner, teacher, and researcher, has studied from other gifted shamanic teachers.

However, when she offers the ecstatic body postures, people experience a different — and often profound — mystical experience.

No previous shamanic journey experience is required. Please wear comfortable clothes, and bring a rattle or drum (optional).

There is no cost for this community event but please feel free to consider a donation.

Quiet Time Changes

meditation

Quiet Time is a free time for you to come in and do your practice, or just relax and read a book from our library, or just lay in savasana to rest.

Quiet Time will be offered ONLY on Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting in April.

We squeezed in a class on Tuesday and will probably have another class on Thursday soon.

Look for it on our schedule . . .
