Astro-Update & Events

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

OmBase‘s own in-house Astrologer, Emily Trinkaus with some exciting news & upcoming events from her August newsletter and website Portland Astrology:

Eclipse Season Grand Finale – This Wednesday

“it is our ignorance of the dark, which is the gateway between death and birth, that gives rise to our fears and contributes to our pain.”

- Demetra George, Mysteries of the Dark Moon

Emily Trinkaus

Emily Trinkaus

We’re nearing the grand finale of this summer’s Eclipse Season — the Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius on August 5. A Lunar Eclipse is a super-potent Full Moon, featuring a rising tide of emotional energy, high pressure, and opportunities for revelation and breakthrough.

At the Lunar Eclipse — when the Earth’s shadow blocks out the light of the Moon — we are confronted with our fear of the dark. The Full Moon that typically lights up the night sky turns a bloody red and darkens, leaving us in the shadows. Even if the Eclipse isn’t visible where you live, the influence is still palpable.

Re-Writing the Wounds of the Spirit
a women’s astrology and Sacred Story workshop
with Emily & Dawn
SAT 8/15 10am-2pm

in Multnomah Village
Cost: $65

Spider Woman weaves a story . . .

Spider Woman weaves a story . . .

2009 features a rare conjunction of Chiron, Neptune and Jupiter, offering opportunities for healing wounds of the Spirit. These “Neptunian” wounds often take the form of addictions, victimization, illusions and fantasies – ways that we unconsciously remain stuck in our limited beliefs and perspectives.

In this workshop, we will use astrology to explore these wounded places from an archetypal perspective and within a larger framework of collective transformation. We’ll also look at where this “Super Conjunction” is happening in your personal birth chart, identifying which areas of your life are calling for healing and growth.

We will use Sacred Story work – a technique involving guided visualization and writing to recreate our lives – to rewrite these old stories of our wounded self and to call in a more liberating story of our inner power and connection with Spirit.

All women are welcome; no previous writing or astrology experience needed.

Contact Emily for more info or to register: etrinkaus@gmail.com, 503-288-7097

Women’s Writing & Astrology Retreat
Archetypes of Feminine Power:
Reclaiming the Dark
with Emily & Dawn
10/16-18, 2009

at Silver Falls

Silver Falls

Silver Falls

In the magical forest of Silver Falls, we meet at the Dark of the Moon – traditionally a time for healing, renewal and regeneration.

Looking at the Moon in our individual birth charts, we’ll explore how feminine archetypes appear and operate in our own lives, and identify the “shadow” aspects of our own expression of the feminine. We’ll use Sacred Story work – a technique using guided visualization and writing to recreate our lives – to reclaim our power from these denied and unconscious parts of ourselves.

We’ll also examine the significance of the Dark Goddess in the context of collective transformation. Approaching the end-date of the 26,000-year Mayan Calendar, we are all now in a “Dark Moon” phase – a time for releasing and transforming structures, systems and ways of being that no longer serve us. In this time of ever-quickening growth and change, how do our individual stories intersect with the unfolding collective drama?

All women are welcome – no previous astrology or writing experience is needed.

We have reduced the price of this series to make it more accessible to all of you!

Please call or email to sign up. Pre-registration $30

Todd is becoming more passionate about Yin yoga and its incredible benefits, so he’s excited to share another yin yoga series with you this month. And to make this series more enticing for you, I enclose a photo of Todd at the beach in Hawaii that was taken a few years back.

The yin approach utilizes long, supported postures that you simply relax into… when the muscles are relaxed, then the myofascial tissue surrounding them can begin to stretch and also strengthen.

The postures are designed to help you move each joint in its full range of motion through its natural range… this is done through gentle but persistent compression of the joints as one hangs out in, and melts into a stretch, so most of the practice is on the floor, and most of it is passive.

Yin Yoga + Sound Healing is back!

FRI 5/29
7:15-9:45 pm

Cost: $25 Pre-registration/payment. $30 at the door

singing bowlsThis very popular event is happening once again at Om Base….

An evening of total relaxation and healing resonance. Tom and Jen will bring their orchestra of healing chimes, singing bowls, and didgeridoos and play while we ease into an hour and a half of Yin Yoga followed by an hour-long sound healing in savasana. You are invited to relax and to let the vibrations of the sound waves ease into your body and find their own way to the spots that need it the most.

Yin yoga is a totally restorative form of yoga in which you stay in supported seated or supine poses for a few minutes at a time while all of your body-mind’s holding patterns melt away. It’s perfect for people who are new to yoga and the perfect balance for yang-centered practices.
Please pre-register for this class to get a spot! It tends to fill up.

Dance Om: Solo Dance Journeys
SAT 5/30
7-9 pm

Cost: Sliding scale $8-$18 (pre-register or drop in)

Solo Dance Journeys
Join with others in a safe, welcoming environment to take a free-form movement journey all your own.

Please join us for this evening of inner-discovery, self-expression and creativity through the joy of dance – no experience necessary!

Since this gathering does not include physical contact with others during the dance, the evening starts with brief boundary setting so that we can all stay focused and open to our inner impulses. And then we’re off!

The journey begins with a short guided movement meditation for presence & grounding—and here is where the verbal input ends. Continuous waves of a wide variety of music will usher your body, mind & spirit from the Om Base studio to anywhere your inner-eye will take you.

Taking these solo journeys with others doing the same provides the intention, energy & richness that only a group dance can bring. Attention to boundaries ensures that each of our dances can be an uninterrupted and deeply personal journey.

We end with a closing circle, where speaking is optional.

that beauty lies all around us,
if we only stop to look.

Living and based in Portland, Michael is always looking at “things” and trying to find an angle, a perspective, a way to portray that subject in a way that will simplify what he feels about it.

Whether it is landscape, travel, or close-up photography, the love of exploration through the lens of the camera is his way of bringing the experience back to share.

“I’ve seen some amazing places, and photography is my way of bringing that amazement back. ”

Working Class Acupuncture – NEW Hillsdale Location!

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

WORKING CLASS ACUPUNCTURE OPENS SECOND LOCATION
Portland Business Defies Recession, Rising Health Care Costs

Working Class AcupunctureA Northeast Portland acupuncture clinic with a populist business model is celebrating its improbable success by opening a second location in Hillsdale. Working Class Acupuncture opened its doors seven years ago in the Cully neighborhood with one licensed acupuncturist treating about twelve people per week; the clinic now provides about four hundred and fifty treatments each week and employs twelve people.

While acupuncture normally costs anywhere from $60 to $150 per treatment,  Working Class Acupuncture charges $15 to $35 per treatment, with patients choosing what to pay based on their own assessment of what they can afford. And while conventional acupuncture practices typically treat patients in individual cubicles, Working Class Acupuncture offers several communal treatment rooms with patients receiving acupuncture in recliners. As a result, an extraordinarily wide range of people are getting acupuncture, most of them for the first time: baristas, bike mechanics, construction workers, artists, musicians, veterans, teachers, janitors, students, as well as many retired people on fixed incomes and those who have lost their health insurance.

Working Class Acupuncture

Working Class Acupuncture - Original Southeast Portland Location

“Pretty much everyone told us that this wouldn’t work,” comments Lisa Rohleder, a Cully resident and the clinic’s co-founder. “The sliding scale, the treating people in recliners, the big red fist on the side of the building – people thought we were crazy. But we had to deconstruct the business model for acupuncture because it was no good at all for people of ordinary incomes. And it turns out that it works much better this way.” So well, in fact, that Working Class Acupuncture sparked the international “community acupuncture movement,” inspiring over 80 clinics in the US and as far away as Israel to adopt similar practices to make acupuncture more financially accessible.

While there are seven other community acupuncture clinics on Portland’s Eastside, none have appeared on the westside until now. “We have people driving to Cully from Beaverton and Hillsboro, and that is just too far when you’re in pain,” explains Rohleder. “We’re trying to serve our patients better by being more accessible to them.” The new WCA clinic is located at 4410 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Highway, about a mile and a half west of the Hillsdale shopping center. Both clinics are open seven days a week, and both will offer free acupuncture all day on May Day to celebrate International Workers’ Day.

Dr. Felicitas Goodman, anthropologist, found that holding a posture represented by figurines and statues found in archaeological sites from hunters and gathers and horticulturists worldwide, is a method for achieving ecstatic trance and its attendant visionary experience.

Dr. Goodman introduced Dr. Analouise Williams to this ancient mystical tradition. Dr. Williams, a shamanic practitioner, teacher, and researcher, has studied from other gifted shamanic teachers.

However, when she offers the ecstatic body postures, people experience a different — and often profound — mystical experience.

No previous shamanic journey experience is required. Please wear comfortable clothes, and bring a rattle or drum (optional).

OmBase Studio

We have so many exciting events happening at Om Base in February!

New Class! Kundalini Yoga

Alana Weintraub Please welcome Alana Weintraub, who will be teaching a Kundalini Yoga class on Fridays, 9:30-11 am, starting Jan 30.

Alana began practicing yoga fifteen years ago as a young teenager, and during college, heard the spiritual call to become a yoga teacher while attending her first of five Kundalini Yoga retreats.  She received Kundalini Yoga teaching certification at the Omega Institute in upstate NY, furthered her teacher training by studying Radiant Child Yoga with Shakta Kaur, and has been teaching to adults and children in Portland since 2006.  In addition to sharing her passion for yoga, she is currently training to be a Waldorf Teacher.

Kundalini yoga classes are a unique and dynamic blend of postures, pranayam (breathwork), mantra, music and meditation, which allow you to deeply experience relaxation, self-healing and elevation.  Stimulating all of your body’s physical and energetic systems, Kundalini yoga revitalizes, de-stresses, and heightens your creative potential. Mixed levels.

Alana will also be teaching our kids and teens yoga classes & workshops, coming up in March….Let us know if you are interested in that!

Yin is in!  …..  3 week series with Todd

Yin Yoga is a term coined by Sarah Powers and popularized most notably by Paul Grilley. Basically, it is an approach to using yoga to counter some of what the Taoist believe tends to happen with many of us as we age, namely that from the waist down we tend to get tighter and tighter, and from the waist up we tend to grow weaker…

The yin approach utilizes long, supported, postures, that you simply relax into… when the muscles are relaxed, then the myofascial tissue surrounding them can begin to stretch and also strengthen. The postures are designed to help you move each joint in its full range of motion through its natural range… this is done through gentle but persistent compression of the joints as one hangs out in, and melts into a stretch, so most of the practice is on the floor, and most of it is passive.

Yin Yoga is ideal as a complementary practice for students that practice a more ‘yang’ style yoga, as well as for athletes that don’t stretch as much as they would like to. It’s beneficial for those people that think yoga isn’t for them as they are “too tight”, or inflexible. Also, for those that have chronic back pain, and other aches and pains.

I found that this practice yields surprising results if it is practiced more frequently, but regularly…so this yin series will be offered periodically, between immersion offerings, three days a week, for an hour each session“.  ~ Todd

Community Acupuncture….after yoga
